“A Tribute to André,” at Lincoln Glenn (April 23–June 27): André Emmerich (1924–2007) was a touchstone figure for The New Criterion. The great art dealer was the posthumous recipient of the 2008 New Criterion Award and a contributorto our pages. Emmerich has now inspired the younger generation of gallerists behind Lincoln Glenn. Beginning this Thursday, the Chelsea gallery is honoring this champion of artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, Anthony Caro, and William Bailey with the exhibition “A Tribute to André.” With thirty works by twenty Emmerich artists, the exhibition reveals the color-filled range of the dealer’s eye through pieces by Hans Hofmann, David Hockney, Jack Tworkov, Ronnie Landfield, Jules Olitski, Sherron Francis, and Friedel Dzubas, among others. The art historian Alex Grimley has contributed the essay for the scholarly catalogue, with a foreword by the sculptor Joel Perlman.
