Martha Walter: A World in Watercolors brings together nearly thirty watercolors dating from approximately 1910 to 1935, featuring scenes from the artists’ colony of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Walter’s travels through Europe and North Africa. Coastal communities, bustling marketplaces, and everyday encounters provided an enduring source of inspiration, offering the artist opportunities to explore light, color, and movement.

Born in Philadelphia in 1875, Walter studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under William Merritt Chase before continuing her education in Paris. Travel became central to her practice, taking her through European cities, fishing villages, and North African marketplaces. Equally drawn to the waterfront of Gloucester and the streets and gathering places of cities abroad, Walter developed a spontaneous approach to watercolor, using luminous washes and economical brushwork to capture the character and atmosphere of her surroundings.
