Executed in 1960, Figure CD reflects Jack Tworkov’s evolving dialogue between figuration and abstraction at a pivotal moment in postwar American art. While associated with the gestural intensity of Abstract Expressionism, Tworkov often resisted complete non-objectivity, allowing traces of the human figure to emerge through vigorous brushwork and layered structure. In this work, sweeping passages of orange, ochre, and deep blue coalesce into a loosely defined vertical form, suggesting the presence of a standing figure without ever fully resolving into representation. The painting embodies the Abstract Expressionist tension between spontaneity and structure, where emotion, movement, and the physical act of painting become inseparable from the image itself.
