According to Geoffrey K. Fleming, Executive Director of the Reading Public Museum in Pennsylvania, the subject of this painting is the artist's favorite model, Gladys Wiles, his daughter and fellow National Academician. Rhododendrons filled the garden at Wiles's studio in Peconic, New York, where the present work may have been painted.
