Born in Nuremberg, Germany, Ilse Getz emigrated to the United States in 1933. In 1958, she married the artist Manoucher Yektai, and the following year the couple traveled to Saratoga Springs after receiving fellowships at Yaddo, a prestigious artists’ residency. Getz’s practice frequently incorporated found materials, which she arranged into carefully considered compositions. In Saratoga, bright shades of orange, yellow, and ochre blend into an assemblage of matchbook covers featuring card deck suits, gambling pieces, and numbered cards from the popular twentieth-century game Flinch. These elements, along with the work’s title, reference Saratoga Springs’ history as a gambling town and her time spent there during her fellowship.
