The title 2:19 Blues refers to the song first recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1940. The painting is inscribed "To Hansi" in the lower right corner, referring to Hansi Janis, wife of Sidney Janis and founder of the Circle, a New Orleans jazz and blues record label. Ernst was close with both of the Janises, and designed the cover of Sidney's 1950 exhibition catalogue "Les Fauves."
