Frederick Mulhaupt was associated with the Cape Ann artists, a group that included Emile Gruppe, Anthony Thieme, Theresa Bernstein, Marguerite Pierson, William Lester Stevens, and Aldro Thompson Hibbard. The painters of this ‘Cape Ann School’ were some of the first U.S. artists to employ plein air painting techniques. Around 1907, Mulhaupt began spending his summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, whose harbors, rivers, fishermen, and coastal scenery would become the subjects of his most celebrated works. Painted in a vibrant Impressionist style, his landscapes capture the character and atmosphere of the region, as seen in Gloucester Boats. By 1922, Gloucester had become Mulhaupt’s permanent home, where he lived and worked for the remainder of his life.
