Biography

Terry Adkins was an American artist whose interdisciplinary practice spanned sculpture, music, performance, film, and printmaking. Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Alexandria, Virginia, he initially studied printmaking before earning an MFA in sculpture from the University of Kentucky. Adkins developed a distinctive artistic language that combined historical research, sound, and material experimentation, often creating immersive installations and performances that honored overlooked cultural figures and explored themes of memory, identity, and spirituality.

Central to Adkins’s practice was his concept of the “recital,” a format that merged visual art and musical performance into a unified experience. Through his ensemble, the Lone Wolf Recital Corps, he orchestrated multimedia works that activated objects, sound, and space. His projects frequently paid tribute to influential Black intellectuals, musicians, and writers, positioning his work within a broader cultural and historical dialogue.

Adkins’s work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including Recital at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum, which traveled to the Block Museum of Art (2012), Infinity is Always Less Than One at the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami (2018), and Resounding at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation (2020). His performances have also been restaged at major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art. He participated in significant international exhibitions including the Whitney Biennial (2014) and the Venice Biennale (2015).

His work is held in major museum collections worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Tate. In addition to his artistic career, Adkins was a dedicated educator, serving as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania from 2000 until his death in 2014.
