Painted in 1943, Amphibious Beast exemplifies Hans Hofmann's adventurous approach to abstraction during the 1940s. By this time, he had developed a dynamic visual language built on bold color, expressive brushwork, and an inventive use of line that reflects the influence of European modernists such as Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. Layers of green and blue create a vibrant field of color, punctuated by vivid reds and touches of yellow. Curved black lines animate the surface, suggesting the presence of an elusive creature that seems to emerge from and dissolve back into the surrounding composition. Having established himself as a painter in 1935 after decades as a celebrated teacher, Hofmann embraced paint as an expressive material not bound to defining a subject on a surface. Works from this period emphasize richly textured surfaces and energetic color, transforming the canvas into a space of movement.
